Dear readers,

Thanks for stopping by. I recently started this new blog and my first post is a social experiment where I will login as a girl on the language learning application HelloTalk. A girl?? Well I am not going to do anything nasty, don’t worry. I have been using HelloTalk for a year and using it for learning Japanese and girls, especially, often take ages to reply. I am going to register as a girl and understand how many and what kind of messages a girl receives. Maybe then I’ll understand why they take so long to reply? Well, lets see. I promise that I will not lure anyone but just try to be nice and friendly during the conversations. I have already installed the application. HelloTalk experience as a girl

I have used a picture of a Japanese girl as a display picture and created a profile. According to the profile I am a Japanese trying to learn English as you can see in the pictures below.

Same day: 10:46 am

Within 40 minutes approx., I see that I have seven followers already. As it can been from the picture above, I have made a post and to sound more real I wrote it in bad English and I see that in 33 minutes I have 18 likes and 4 comments. Wait a second, while I was typing the fifth comment came in. Wow! I cannot believe this man. When I was a guy, after constantly using the app for weeks, I used to have 7 followers and after a year it is about 50+. This app works like a charm for girls. But, and there is always a but, let me check the messages to understand more.

Same day: 11:30 am

After an one-and-a-half hour, I am already talking with five people, mostly men who messaged me first. Some are messaging me in Japanese, obviously. I had to tell them that I do not want to reply in Japanese as I want to practice English haha. Oh my god! I do not know how am I going to handle this.

Same day: 12:30 pm

It just happened that asked my personal contact and is already flirting with me. Well, that is a bad sign. I think that is bit of a shock for a person who uses platform for the first time.

Well, I want to spend more time to know more but I do not think it is appropriate as I am afraid that I will be toying with emotions. I think that is a good idea to end things when they are good. So, I will delete the account now.

So I have deleted the account now. Kindly find my verdict and some tips below and I would be happy to know your comments.

Verdict

So yeah, the verdict is more or less clear. I now understand why girls take a long time to respond because there are so many men out there who message women. But the question is ‘is it safe for women to use HelloTalk?’. I think it still is ok. All you need to know that all men are not the same. But there are some jerks out there and I have not experienced so I do not know. Apart from that, ‘is it fair for men?’ because they have to approach all the time. What about shy men like me? Haha, Well that was the lesson I have learnt after a month or so. I think that is how the world works in general. I have met so many friends on HelloTalk and they are very nice. I just use it for the purpose of learning Japanese so I never faced any problem at all. Well for all the girls who face harassers, sorry I cannot change them. Some friends who are girls on HelloTalk told me some stories like this and what they say is, Just ignore them. For all the guys, All the best with your language learning experience. Cheers!

Tips

  1. I think it is a great idea to indicate in the profile that you are not here for dating. I have not tried that but most of the people who contacted me tried to ask me about what I have written in your profile. So we can understand that man read the profile. So if you indicate that in your profile, it will be an added advantage.
  2. As the app suggests, do not share your contact to others until you trust them.
  3. Please tell the partner that you do not like to receive audio messages or calls, if you really don’t want to. Do not hesitate.
  4. If you are learning Japanese, Japanese people are very friendly compared to others on HelloTalk. Try to reach them. They are very helpful. But do not harass them please 🙂
